Respect nature in reconstruction Today is December 26th, which marks the fifth anniversary of the calamitous South Asian Tsunami. For Aceh, Indonesia, one of the hardest-hit areas, perhaps you could say that the catastrophe was a blessing in disguise for its people, on several levels. First, it brought an end to the decades of violence between rebels and the Indonesian government, who fought a brutal conflict over ownership of Aceh's natural resources. Secondly, the restored peace effected a starting point to ameliorate the region's war-affected education system, giving rise to 1500 new schools in the past five years. Thirdly, the Aceh people grew more environmentally conscious, notably in their post-tsunami efforts to restore the coastal ecosystem, such as reforesting mangroves. Meulaboh, a beautiful seaside city A group of young men plays soccer on the beach of Meulaboh. Sitting by the ocean and enjoying outdoor activities are the locals' favorite past times, especially after a refreshing rain shower during the monsoon season. Tsunami destroyed 70% of city The 2004 South Asian Tsunami destroyed 70 percent of Meulaboh and claimed over 30000 lives. The World Bank, as a partner agency to the Multi Donor Fund for Aceh & Nias (MDF) and the Government of Indonesia played a vital role in the post --disaster recovery programs. One such program was the Infrastructure Reconstruction Financing Facility (IRFF) which focused on the reconstruction of key infrastructure: water supply, reservoir and drainage systems, roads, water resources and ports in Aceh and Nias. This video presents a sketch of the local people's candid responses towards selected projects under IRFF and the impact they have had on their everyday lives.

After the Tsunami: Rebuilding Aceh
After the Tsunami: Rebuilding Aceh
In 2004 an earthquake in the Indian Ocean created a tsunami, killing more than 225000 people and devastating entire communities in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. While organizations such as the American Red Cross provided valuable disaster relief services, Grameen Foundation and other microfinance programs convened to determine strategies for long-term economic recovery. With funding from the American Red Cross, Grameen Foundation has continued to support Indonesias poor with Mitra Dhuafa for nearly four successful years in the tsunami-devastated region of Aceh, Indonesia. Aceh West Coast River-Crossing on A Raft
Aceh West Coast River-Crossing on A Raft
In December 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated most rooads and bridges along Aceh West Coast. The tsunami had changed the landscape of the villages along the coastal line, in which sea water intrudes at the used-to-be inhabited lands. The only parts of the bridges left are the concrete poles that now stand in the water. The new road and bridge have not completed yet. Now, if you take a road trip along the West Coast route, you should cross the big rivers on simple rafts. Hundreds of vehicles and passengers hop on rafts made of fiber boats and woods everyday. The simple river-crossing service near the points where the bridges used to stand have made good businesses for the locals. Here is how the river-crossing point alongAceh Western Coast looks like.

Wardah Hasyim: on Post-conflict Education
The Aceh region of Indonesia is rich with culture and natural resources. However, like many areas around the world, it has struggled through periods of political instability and conflict, not to mention a devastating tsunami in 2005 that cost Aceh thousands of lives and left many communities without shelter. Today, Aceh is finally enjoying political stability and relative calm. In this video, IFP Alum Wardah Hasyim raises the issue of post-conflict education for those who were forced to drop out of school due to regional turmoil. She invites viewers to help her answer the question: "What is the appropriate intervention for this type of group?"
